I am afraid of....
small, dark spaces, and elevators. I am extremely claustrophobic, and feel very anxious about even the thought of being stuck or confined in a small space. When I watch a movie or TV show and someone is stuck in a small space, or maybe even buried alive, it makes me feel anxious and I usually need to look away because it causes me anxiety to watch the character in a situation that is my worst nightmare
I am angry about...
prejudice or close-minded people. When I read stories online that are about racist or homophobic or any group of ignorant people, it causes me to feel so angry. I don't understand how we can live in a world with so much technology and forward thinkers, yet there are still people whose beliefs date back decades or more, and will probably never change their way of thinking
I can do something about...
myself and how I act. It is impossible to control other people, or the outcomes of other thing, but the only thing that any one as control of in this world is themselves. I can only choose what I want to think about something, or how I want to act. Because I can only control myself and my actions.
When people talk about that phrase "I can do something about..." they often finish it with "myself", "my actions", "my happiness". I notice there's a lot of zen-ish New Age attitudes about taking responsibility for one's own happiness or behavior. And they've always seemed odd to me. Because we talk about being angry about bigotry, but then turn around and say "but only I can control my actions. I can't control other people and they can't control me". Why can't bigoted people take this stance? Why do we not take this stance about bigoted people? Not that I'm saying we should, because we shouldn't just accept bigotry. We need to fight it.
ReplyDeleteI just find the hypocrisy behind such statements to be odd and a little frustrating. What do you think?
You don't think that there's something you could do to alter the thinking of others? How do you think women got their rights? By protesting and protesting and protesting. It takes time and effort, but it IS possible to change the ideals of people, sometimes for things that almost seem impossible.
